Trans+ History Week 2025 Puts historical truth in the spotlight
Uncharted brought together team of LGBTQIA+ volunteers and allies from our community to produce the second awareness campaign to mark Trans+ History Week, a global week of sharing trans+ history and stories from around the world.
Much of trans+ history has been lost, and with Section 28 in the UK this lack of knowledge over many years has meant that trans+ identities are coming under increasing pressure. With this lack of understanding, a loud minority are seeking to minimise trans+ people by labelling trans+ identity as a fad, or even a social contagion. This attitude effectively repeats the conversation that led to LGB erasure under Section 28 from the 80s. But trans+ people have always been here, and always will be.
Although much progress has been made in recent years, LGBTQ+ hate crime is on the rise dramatically in the UK, and gains are being lost in terms of legal frameworks, access to services and societal acceptance.
Our campaign “Always been here” featured a series of press ads and posters that were displayed in major UK cities across the week, including Coventry, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Manchester - displaying contextual messages around the historical immutability and depth of trans+ experience. We also chose to highlight some of the incredible contributions that individuals from this community have made for us all in the UK, and for the world.
